Formentera is the smallest of Spain’s Balearic islands in the Mediterranean Sea. It’s reachable by ferry from its more crowded, better known island neighbor, Ibiza, and makes for a popular destination in the summertime. It’s known for its clear waters, gorgeous pristine beaches backed by dunes and pine trees and charming villages. Beaches with the whitest sand and the clearest and most crystalline waters have marked out this island as one of the most idyllic destinations in the Balearics. Many believe that the beaches on Formentera are among the best in the world. The island's name is usually said to derive from the Latin word frumentarium, meaning "granary".
